How do you make sure you recommend the best options to your clients?

"When I'm looking for the best investment opportunities and protection products for my clients, I tap into extensive independent research by HSBC's research teams in key markets across the world - from the US and UK to Latin America and Asia.

"The research team's job is to monitor more than 10,000 funds - and use detailed analysis of their performance, charges and administration to create the investment selection available through our Worldwide Funds Service. Any funds that fall short are filtered out, leaving a shortlist of funds that are all there on merit - chosen for their quality, strength and suitability.

"Because the selection process is carried out by independent teams who look at the whole marketplace, our shortlist includes best in class funds from a wide range of providers - not just HSBC.

"The solutions I recommend to my clients are impartial too. I don't have to lead with our own products, so I can do what's right for each individual. This means there's no product bias in any of my recommendations, but they all come with the HSBC seal of approval."

Where are your clients based?

"I help expats all over the world - at every stage in their lives. Some of my clients have been working abroad for years, while others are just starting out. I've also got a number of clients who are close to retirement, looking forward to enjoying life after work.

"I believe we're one of the few banks who can ensure a seamless transition when a client moves to another country. One of my clients relocated to South Africa recently, so I arranged for their portfolio to be transferred to a Wealth Manager based at our office in Johannesburg. This meant that within days of moving, my client had someone they could meet with face to face to discuss their investments.

"We can also set up accounts for clients before they move to a new country. So when they get there, everything's ready for them."

Has your career ever taken you overseas?

"Since I started my career in wealth management, I've lived in the UK, South Africa and Jersey. Most of our Wealth Managers are expats. I think that's why we're able to provide valuable advice and support - because we understand how hard expats have to work for their money, and the sacrifices they (and their families) have to make.

"Life as an expat can be challenging, but it can also be very rewarding. I see my role as helping clients overcome the challenges - and making sure they enjoy all the rewards an international lifestyle has to offer."

What happens during a financial review with a new client?

"When I sit down with a new client, my priority is to understand what's going on in their life - and where they'd like to be in 5, 10, maybe even 50 years time. They could be saving for a retirement property in the Caribbean - or looking for ways to fund their children's education. They'll also be keen to make the most of their disposable income. And they'll probably need a life insurance policy that will follow them around the world.

"During a financial review, I make sure I look at the complete picture before I drill down into the detail. So we'll discuss everything from current savings and investments to family commitments and plans for the future. Taking time to understand a client's situation helps me recommend the right solutions for them, based on their individual circumstances."

How much contact do you have with your clients after their initial financial review?

"I catch up with all my clients at least once a year, but we usually talk or email more often than that.

"So many things can change in an expat's life - promotion, relocation, starting a family, taking early retirement. All these factors have an impact on their financial plans and the way their portfolio should be structured. That's why regular reviews are essential, so I can check a client's investments are on target.

"Another great thing about HSBC Expat is the online administration service we've developed. It means clients can check how their investments are performing."
