What is sustainable investing?

Sustainable investing refers to types of investments that aim to generate long-term financial returns while advancing sustainable outcomes.

Why sustainable investing is important

As an investor, it's likely you'll want to know where your money is going and what it's being used for. When you invest more sustainably, it means more of your money is going towards companies that are advancing sustainable outcomes.

Is sustainable investing profitable?

It's possible to invest more sustainably and potentially make a profit at the same time but there are no guarantees. Environmental, social, and governmental (ESG) issues can impact share prices – both positively and negatively.

Taking these factors into account when investing could increase the resilience of your investments. However, the value of any type of investment can fall as well as rise and you may not get back what you invest.

All investments should be seen as a medium to long-term commitment, meaning you should be prepared to invest for at least 5 years.

Types of sustainable investing

Sustainable investing can use different approaches and may be referred to as:

  • Environmental, social and governance (ESG) investing
  • Ethical investing
  • Impact investing
  • Socially responsible investing (SRI)
  • Values-based investing
  • Conscious investing
  • Green investing

There are differences in the way they work and their objectives.

Before you invest, it’s important to understand how an ESG and sustainable investment is measured and whether it aligns to your objectives and financial goals.
