There's a daily limit of GBP250,000 for international payments made through the HSBC Expat Mobile Banking app and online banking. Please call us if you need to transfer more than this amount.

Our standard transfer time for payments made to non-HSBC accounts through the mobile banking app and online banking is 1 to 3 days.

As part of our security checks, you may receive a verification call from us within 72 hours of making a transfer. If we’re unable to contact you it might delay your payment so please ensure your contact details are up to date.

There are no daily limits on the amount of funds you can transfer using the telephone banking service.

International payments made in telephone banking are subject to the following fees.

Payments under the online banking limit: GBP50

Payments over the online banking limit,

Premier account holder GBP9

Advance account holder GBP14

International payments may also be subject to correspondent bank charges up to USD90.

International payments sent through telephone banking generally arrive within 2 to 5 business days.

Transfers to other HSBC accounts are generally processed instantly.

If you are a Premier customer, there is no charge to make transfers between HSBC accounts. For Advance customers there is a GBP5 charge (or currency equivalent) to transfer funds to HSBC accounts, other than HSBC Expat.

There are no correspondent bank charges associated with HSBC to HSBC payments.

For immediate transfers in online, mobile and phone banking, we provide live exchange rates which are updated every 60 seconds between:

• the opening of the Hong Kong market on Monday morning local time
• the closure of the New York market on Friday afternoon local time

Live rates won't be available on public holidays or if we have to close unexpectedly.

Transfers made outside live rate hours will be based on the most recent exchange rates from the close of business the previous day and will include an additional premium.

If you're setting up the transfer for a later date, the exchange rate will be the rate that applies at the time of the transfer.

Our exchange rate margins are tiered, so better foreign exchange rates are available for higher transfers.

If you need to convert currency on a regular basis, you can fix your exchange rate in advance. You can also get enhanced pricing if you convert large amounts of currency each year. For further details, speak to your Relationship Manager.

On Tuesday 30 September 2025, HSBC Expat will discontinue its cheque service.

If you’re currently using cheques to pay bills or make payments to the same payee regularly, please make alternative arrangements such as a Direct Debit or standing order as soon as possible. This will automate the payment for you and will stop you falling into arrears.

You may have written a cheque to a payee in the last 6 months that has not yet been paid in. Where this is the case, we suggest you get in touch with your payee(s) to let them know about the service ending and urge them to present the cheque for payment before 30 September 2025. Any cheques presented after this date will not be honoured.

Sometimes we require additional information about a payment you want to make. This is to make sure the payment complies with our internal policy standards and any applicable laws, regulations and policies.

You can easily track the status from the 'Pay & Transfer tab' within the mobile app. Select any international payment made using online or mobile banking within the past 60 days to track its status.

Payments made over the phone rather than in online or mobile banking will not appear in the International Payment Tracker in the app. If you need information on the status of payments made using telephone banking, you will need to call us.

You can make a sterling transfer from the UK to your HSBC Expat sterling current account using CHAPS. You will need to quote your:

• name
• 6-digit sort code (40-61-62)
• 8-digit account number

For sterling current accounts, your 6-digit sort code (40-61-62) and 8-digit account number are displayed as the last 14 digits of your account's IBAN number.

If you're making a sterling transfer from the UK to a sterling savings account, or an account which is held in a different currency, you must quote your account's IBAN number along with the associated BIC/SWIFT code MIDLGB22 when you make the transfer.

If you receive a payment or transfer to your HSBC Expat account from overseas in a different currency to your account, we convert it using the HSBC Exchange Rate at that time before crediting it to your account.

To receive a payment, you must provide the sending bank with:

• the amount and currency
• your full name and address
• your IBAN 
• our correspondent bank details for the currency
• our account name - HSBC Bank plc Jersey branch
• our SWIFT address - MIDLJESH

They will need to send:

• an 'authenticated SWIFT MT103 message' to our SWIFT address with your name, address, IBAN and currency details 
• a 'SWIFT cover (MT 202) payment message' to our correspondent bank

If you want to check when you will receive a payment, you should contact the sending bank to ask about their processing times.

If you’re still receiving cheques from individuals or businesses, please contact the cheque issuer to arrange another means of payment. Bank transfers, Direct Debits and standing orders are all secure, quick and efficient alternatives.    

If you've received a cheque that is yet to be paid in, please make sure you send this to us for payment before 30 September 2025.
